History
Oak Grove Baptist Church is located in the Millers Gap community of Avery County. In 1899, land was donated for a public school house. At various times preaching services were held at the school until the spring of 1900 when regular preaching and a Sunday School was organized.
On the second Sunday in August 1900, T.M. Reid and E.A. Stamey preached and there were 17 professions of faith in Christ. On August 24, 1900, T.M. Reid baptized 13 converts in North Toe River, and the same day a church was organized from the baptized; the church assumed the name of Oak Grove Baptist Church of Christ. On August 26, 1900 T.M. Reid and E.A. Stamey were elected as pastors.
In the year 1920 the second church building was started. The land was acquired from A.J. Taylor and the pastor at the time was Rev. D.R. Kilgore.
In 1973 the present church was built and the congregation moved into the church on August 19, 1973. Rev. Earl Carver, Jr. was the pastor.
On March 15, 1992, our Family LIfe Center was dedicated. This 5,000 square-foot multi-purpose metal building contains a kitchen, storage rooms, classrooms and a basketball court. Rev. Phil Murdock was the pastor.
In the year 2000 major renovations were made with the present sanctuary. Future plans are to renovate our educational classrooms.
